Photo gallery: SV Darmstadt 98 defeats the Bundesliga team 2-0 and advances to the round of 16 after a passionate fight
What a cup night for SV Darmstadt 98! As the bottom team in the 2. Bundesliga, the Lilies traveled to SV Elversberg as clear underdogs – and returned with a surprising 2-0 (1-0) victory. Against the Bundesliga side, who were clearly superior for long stretches, Darmstadt displayed a passionate defensive performance, fought for every ball, and had the necessary luck in the decisive moments. Above all, they were remarkably efficient in front of goal: two genuine scoring opportunities were enough for two goals and a place in the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.
The match began disastrously for Florian Kohfeldt's team. Just minutes in, Nicolas Verkooijen got his foot caught in the turf and had to be substituted due to injury. But it was his replacement, Lars Kehl, who then provided the surprising opening goal. After a foul on Kai Klefisch in the sixth minute, Kehl stepped up to take a free kick from about 25 meters and fired the ball into the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
What followed was, for long stretches, a constant defensive battle. Elversberg took control, pushing Darmstadt deep into their own half and creating numerous chances. Darmstadt struggled to relieve the pressure. After winning possession, they often lost the ball far too quickly. But the team fought back with all their might against the favorites' attacks. Time and again, the players threw themselves in front of the hosts' shots, defended with great commitment, and could also rely on another strong performance from goalkeeper Marcel Schuhen.
Even after the change of ends, little changed in the flow of the game initially. Elversberg pressed for the equalizer, but then Darmstadt struck again with clinical precision. Following a low corner kick from Lance Duijvestijn, Milan Smit was on hand in the 56th minute to tap the ball in from close range for a 2-0 lead. Ironically, Darmstadt extended their advantage precisely during a period when the hosts were almost completely in control.
The remaining time turned into a veritable defensive battle. Elversberg tried everything, but found it increasingly difficult to break down the deep-lying and tenacious Darmstadt defense. Numerous long-range shots also failed to produce the desired result. As the game wore on, the upset seemed imminent, until the final whistle finally brought immense relief and jubilation to the Darmstadt fans.
In terms of skill, SV 98 were clearly outmatched by the Bundesliga side for much of the game. But on this evening, other qualities mattered: willpower, fighting spirit, team cohesion, and near-perfect finishing. After so many disappointments in the league, this victory is likely to mean far more to the Lilies than just advancing in the cup. It shows that the team can hold its own against a technically superior opponent if commitment and defensive discipline are on point.
