The Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt invites young people to the city church on October 31st – a celebratory church service followed by a party
The Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt will celebrate Reformation Day on Saturday, October 31, 2026, with a festive church service followed by a "Reformation Halloween Party." The events will take place in the Darmstadt City Church, Kirchstraße 11, and are part of the program "500 Years of Reformation in Darmstadt.".
The celebratory church service begins at 4 p.m. From 7 p.m. onwards, the town church will be transformed into an event venue for young people aged 14 and over, who are invited to a party with a disc jockey.
Festive church service about certainty and change
“What is certain and what sustains us? A Reformation Festival in times of change” is the theme of Dean Dr. Raimund Wirth’s sermon. The central question is thus one of orientation and certainty in a time of social change.
The musical arrangements will be made by city church cantor Christian Roß on organ and piano, and Katharina Roß with vocals.
The service will also be attended by President Dr. Annette Laakmann, Deputy Dean Sven Sabary, and representatives of various church institutions. These include the church council of the city parish, the Protestant youth council, the Darmstadt Association of Christian Churches, and the Catholic pastoral region.
Following the service, all visitors are invited to a reception in the chancel of the town church. There will be an opportunity for conversation and fellowship.
Halloween party for teenagers aged 14 and over
From 7 p.m. onwards, the town church will be entirely dedicated to the "Reformation Halloween Party". With a DJ and music, the event is expressly aimed at young people aged 14 and over.
The combination of Reformation service and youth party is part of the series of events for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in Darmstadt.
500 Years of Reformation in Darmstadt
Reformation Day commemorates October 31, 1517. According to tradition, Martin Luther published his 95 Theses on this day at the Castle Church in Wittenberg. The resulting ecclesiastical and societal changes ultimately led to the formation of the Protestant churches.
The Reformation began in Darmstadt in 1526. On August 21, Landgrave Philipp wrote to the city council demanding that the pastor of the then St. Mary's Church, today's city church, be replaced by a Protestant preacher.
The Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt is commemorating these events from 500 years ago with an extensive series of events.
