Modern traffic light system is scheduled to go into operation from October 29th
A new traffic light system has been installed at the intersection of Klappacher Straße and Karlstraße in Darmstadt. The Mobility and Civil Engineering Office of the City of Darmstadt has completely renewed the existing traffic signal technology. After completion of the remaining work, the system is expected to be operational on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
With this modernization, the city aims not only to improve the technical equipment of the intersection but also to increase accessibility. Darmstadt is investing a total of around €50,000 in the new traffic light system.
New control technology and signal transmitters installed
As part of the work, the existing traffic light system was completely modernized. The new system features a modern control unit and updated control technology.
The entire outdoor area was also replaced. This includes all signal heads and the pedestrian push buttons that allow pedestrians to request the traffic light to change.
The renovation is intended to bring the technical equipment of the intersection up to modern standards.
Acoustic signals make crossing easier
An important component of the new traffic light system is improved accessibility.
The traffic light system has an acoustic signaling system to assist blind and visually impaired people when crossing Karlstrasse.
Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey emphasizes the importance of this improvement:
"With the new traffic light system, we are not only improving the technical equipment of the intersection, but also increasing accessibility in the street space."
According to the city, the acoustic signals complement the already barrier-free design of the nearby Goethestraße bus stop.
The mobile construction site traffic light is dismantled at night
Until the new system is operational, a temporary construction traffic light will remain in use at the intersection.
It is scheduled to be dismantled on the night of Thursday, October 29th, to Friday, October 30th, 2026.
The city deliberately scheduled the dismantling work for nighttime hours to minimize the impact on other road traffic and tram operations.
The total cost for the renewal of the traffic signal system amounts to approximately 50,000 euros.
