Spectacular match at Böllenfalltor – great fighting spirit, but not enough for promotion
SV Elversberg drew 3-3 under the floodlights on Saturday evening . Despite playing with ten men, the Lilies showed impressive fighting spirit and secured a point – one that, however, is likely to be insufficient for their promotion dreams.
The team from southern Hesse got off to a dream start, taking an early lead through Patric Pfeiffer and Fraser Hornby. But shortly before halftime, they suffered a double blow: First, Pfeiffer received a red card in the 44th minute, and then the ensuing free kick unfortunately found its way into the net – suddenly Darmstadt were trailing 2-3.
Great morale despite being outnumbered
Even with a man down, Darmstadt didn't give up and came out of the locker room with a lot of energy. Just a few minutes after the restart, Hornby had a good chance (48th minute), but made amends shortly afterwards: After a superb combination with Isac Lidberg, the striker scored to equalize at 3-3 (51st minute).
Fueled by the special atmosphere in the stadium, Darmstadt threw everything into the game. The ten remaining players fought passionately, running, tackling, and working tirelessly until the final whistle. Captain Marcel Schuhen later spoke of a "special energy" that carried the team.
Even though the point will probably not be enough in the promotion battle, SV 98 put on a performance that was celebrated by the fans – almost as if it were a victory.
