Two free events on November 7th and 14th at the city library
What actually happens to our trash after the garbage truck has collected it? Why does waste end up in the ocean, and how can even children contribute to protecting the environment? These and other questions will be explored in two reading events organized by the Darmstadt Municipal Services Department (EAD) at the city library.
On Saturday, November 7th, and Saturday, November 14th, 2026, EAD employees will read aloud from two children's books starting at 11:00 AM each day. The books deal with environmental protection, waste, and the responsible use of our environment. The events are open to the public, free of charge, and suitable for children aged four and up.
Stories for little world savers
The focus of the reading events is on two books that introduce children to environmental issues in different ways.
The book "Stories for Little World Savers" contains ten short stories about changes in the world. It aims to encourage children to engage with their environment and develop their own ideas.
The second book is titled "Garbage – Everything about the most annoying thing in the world!". In it, young listeners learn, among other things, what happens to the waste after it's collected by the garbage truck and how garbage ends up in the oceans.
The stories convey knowledge about environmental protection and waste in a child-friendly way.
Inspiring children to protect the environment
With these reading events, the EAD aims to raise children's awareness of environmental issues at an early age and encourage them to take action themselves.
City treasurer André Schellenberg welcomes the renewed cooperation with the city library.
“We adults know that children want to protect and shape their environment. With this renewed reading campaign, the EAD wants to encourage children to develop and contribute their own ideas,” explains Schellenberg.
He was looking forward to being back at the Darmstadt City Library.
City library as a place of learning
Holger Klötzner, head of the education department, also emphasizes the importance of such programs.
The city library aims to inspire people of all ages to read and learn. It is especially important to foster curiosity and a thirst for knowledge in children from an early age.
"It is particularly wonderful when they learn from an early age how important it is to take responsibility for society," explains Klötzner.
The two reading events thus combine reading promotion and environmental education.
Each event lasts approximately one hour. There is no participation fee.
