Environmental education center receives nationwide recognition for sustainable educational work
The Kühkopf Treasure Island Environmental Education Center (UBZ) has been honored with the "National Award – Education for Sustainable Development ." The award was presented by the Federal Ministry of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth together with the German UNESCO Commission at a ceremony in Stuttgart.
A total of 30 initiatives were recognized for their outstanding commitment to education for sustainable development (ESD). According to the jury, the environmental education center on the Rhine island of Kühkopf impressed with its innovative educational programs aligned with the sustainability goals of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda.
“We are incredibly proud of this award. It is both confirmation and motivation for us to consistently continue on the path we have chosen and thus help shape the future,” said Stella Meyer from the Environmental Education Centre at the award ceremony.
Regional President Prof. Dr. Jan Hilligardt also praised the award: “With the ESD award for our environmental education center Schatzinsel Kühkopf, the Federal Ministry of Education and the UNESCO Commission are sending a strong signal for future-oriented and responsible education in our region.”
Environmental education in the Kühkopf nature reserve
The Environmental Education Centre is located on the Rhine island of Kühkopf and informs visitors about Hesse's largest nature reserve, the Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue. In addition to a diverse program of events with numerous cooperation partners, the centre offers guided tours for groups as well as environmental education programs for schools and kindergartens.
The focus is on topics such as nature and species conservation, as well as sustainable thinking and action. The educational programs are tailored to different age groups and aim to raise awareness of environmental and climate protection.
