Repeated incidents in several city districts – city appeals to parents and young people
Following repeated incidents of fireworks being set off in various districts of Weiterstadt, the city is calling for greater consideration. Fireworks are particularly problematic near forests, fields, and nature reserves, as well as near retirement and nursing homes. The city also reminds residents that fireworks may not be set off outside of legally permitted hours without the appropriate permit.
The city reports that fireworks have been set off repeatedly in recent weeks. In addition to the potential danger to people, it points in particular to the effects on domestic and wild animals, as well as the fire risk in dry vegetation areas.
City warns of fire hazard and wildlife
Sudden flashes of light and loud noises can startle wild animals and cause them to flee. Near roads, this can also lead to dangerous traffic situations.
According to the city, the number of fire brigade call-outs for small forest and brush fires this year is higher than usual. In dry vegetation, even sparks can ignite fires. Therefore, particular caution is required in forests, forest edges, and protected habitats.
With African swine fever , the city is asking people not to unnecessarily disturb wild animals. Startled wild boars could leave their habitats, cross roads, or move into areas more frequented by people and domestic animals.
Fireworks outside of permitted times
The city points out that setting off fireworks outside of legally prescribed times or without the required permit constitutes a legal violation and can be punished with a fine.
“Good cooperation works when we not only look at what we ourselves want to do, but also at the impact our actions have on others,” says Mayor Niklas Gehnich.
Appeal to parents and guardians
Parents and guardians are specifically addressed. They should inform children and young people about the dangers, age limits, and legal regulations regarding the handling of fireworks.
The city also points out that fireworks are sometimes ordered online without parents' knowledge. It therefore recommends keeping an eye on orders and deliveries.
In addition to families, schools and clubs could help to raise awareness among children and young people about the possible consequences of fireworks and the reasons for existing rules.
The city says it will intervene wherever people, animals, nature or property are specifically endangered.
