Construction work on Klappacher Straße will start at the beginning of May
As the City of Darmstadt, together with HEAG mobilo and other project partners, announced, construction work for the barrier-free upgrade of the "Goethestraße" stop in the Bessungen district will begin on May 4th. This project is part of the infrastructure project along Line 3 (IGEL3). A detour will be in place for the first phase of construction starting April 30th.
Streetscape adjustments until July
Until the start of the summer holidays on July 6th, Klappacher Straße will be slightly shifted towards Wolfkehl'scher Park in the area of the tram stop. This is due to the planned extension of the tram stop to 45 meters, allowing longer trams and vehicles with trailers to stop there in the future.
At the same time, the road surface, sidewalks and pedestrian crossings will be renewed.
Changes for traffic and residents
During the construction work, there will be traffic restrictions:
- Outbound traffic will be diverted via Freiberger Platz and Wittmannstraße
- Traffic heading towards the city center is routed via the opposite lane
- The footpath by the park is temporarily closed; an alternative route is signposted
In addition, 13 parking spaces will be permanently lost in the park area. Construction noise is to be expected during the construction period.
Further construction phases in summer and autumn
During the summer holidays – after the Heinerfest – the tracks in the station area will be renewed. These date back to the 1970s. The work will take place concurrently with an existing rail replacement bus service.
Finally, in the autumn, the barrier-free upgrade of the stop will take place while the tram service continues. Plans include, among other things:
- a tactile guidance system
- digital passenger information displays with text-to-speech function
- a raised sideboard for easier boarding
- new passenger shelters with green roofs
According to the city and the companies involved, they are already in contact with residents and business owners.
