The city is redeveloping the area between Landskronstrasse and Moosbergstrasse
Darmstadt is structurally upgrading the sidewalk on the east side of Heidelberger Straße between Landskronstraße and Moosbergstraße.
The work is scheduled to begin in the first week of June. The aim of the project is to improve the safety and usability of the sidewalk for pedestrians.
More space for pedestrians and families
The affected sidewalk is located on the service road of Heidelberger Straße. In the immediate vicinity are, among other things, a post office, a pharmacy, an optician, residential buildings, and the Landskronstraße public transport stop.
Currently, the usable width of the sidewalk is approximately 1.20 meters. In the future, the sidewalk will be widened to 2.50 meters, thus conforming to the standard width.
Transport officer Paul Georg Wandrey explains: “This will improve conditions, especially for people with reduced mobility, families with strollers and schoolchildren.”
Fewer parking spaces, more sustainable mobility
As part of the redesign, the existing angled parking will be replaced by parallel parking spaces. Parking will be completely eliminated in the area with historic Art Nouveau floor mosaics.
This will reduce the number of parking spaces from 21 to 9.
At the same time, four new bicycle parking spaces and two car sharing parking spaces are being created.
Historic floor mosaics should be protected
According to the city, the measure also serves to improve the urban landscape of the streetscape.
The listed floor mosaics in the side room are to be made more visible and protected at the same time by the new traffic regulations.
The cost of the measure is approximately 18,000 euros.
