The special permit is intended to prevent the spread of the Japanese beetle
To curb the spread of the invasive Japanese beetle , the Darmstadt Regional Council the municipality of Trebur a special permit to burn plant waste. The permit is valid immediately until October 31 and is subject to strict conditions.
Only plant waste from within the municipality may be burned. The fires will take place under the supervision of the fire department in an open area opposite the municipal recycling center.
The background to this is the detection of the Japanese beetle, an invasive pest that infests numerous plant species. According to the regulations of the plant protection service of the Giessen regional council, green waste from the so-called infestation zone (with a radius of one kilometer) and from the six-kilometer buffer zone may not be removed from the area during the main season.
Exception to the usual disposal route
In principle, garden and plant waste must be recycled according to the Circular Economy Act – for example, through composting or in recycling facilities. According to the regional government, alternative treatment methods were examined. However, since these were not suitable for reliably preventing the spread of the pest, the exemption permit was granted.
Burning is only permitted at designated times and under the constant supervision of the fire department. Furthermore, regulations regarding fire safety and the limitation of smoke and odor nuisance apply. The order was coordinated with the fire protection department of the Groß-Gerau district and the plant protection service.
The regional government emphasizes that such an exception is only permissible under special conditions and in the interest of the common good.
