The Science Fiction Club invites you to a lecture with Bettina Wurche in Eppertshausen
The Darmstadt Science Fiction Club invites you to a literary evening with biologist and science journalist Bettina Wurche on Saturday, June 13, 2026. The focus will be on her lecture "Jules Verne and the Discovery of Marine Research".
The event will take place as part of the monthly meeting of the Darmstadt Science Fiction Club at the Adebar restaurant in Eppertshausen. The meeting begins at 6 p.m., and the presentation starts at 8 p.m. in the side room of the TAV Hall at Jahnstraße 2.
How much science is in Jules Verne's novels?
Jules Verne (1828–1905) is considered a pioneer of the science fiction novel. His works combine technological innovations and scientific discoveries with exciting adventure stories.
The lecture will focus on his famous novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea." In it, Verne sends the marine explorer Professor Aronnax, together with Captain Nemo, on an extraordinary journey across the world's oceans.
Bettina Wurche sheds light on which scientific findings the author incorporated into his work, how far marine research actually progressed in the 19th century, and which technical visions Verne anticipated in his time.

The speaker combines science and science fiction
The speaker studied zoology, fisheries science, and paleontology in Hamburg and has been involved in science communication for many years. On her blog "Meertext," she publishes articles about marine research, the deep sea, climate change, polar regions, and astrobiology.
As a long-standing member of the Science Fiction Club Germany, she regularly combines scientific topics with the world of science fiction in her lectures.
admission free
The lecture is part of the "Special-Event" series, which is organized by the Science Fiction Treff Darmstadt together with the Science Fiction Club Germany and other partners.
Admission is free. The event will take place in a separate side room, so that visitors to the regular meeting can freely decide whether they wish to attend the lecture.
