The series “250 Years of the USA” highlights developments under Trump
The Darmstadt Network for Political Education invites you to another lecture in its series "250 Years of the USA: Between the Destruction of Democracy, Culture Wars, and the World Cup" on Wednesday, May 6th. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Offenes Haus Darmstadt.
Political developments in focus
Under the title "Politics as a Culture War: The USA under Trump", political scientist Johannes Völz from Goethe University Frankfurt talks about current social and political developments in the United States.
The focus is on questions concerning the strategies of the so-called MAGA movement and its influence on politics, society, and culture. The reactions of civil society, educational institutions, and cultural organizations are also examined.
Debates about history, media and society
The lecture examines how political conflicts in the USA have increasingly developed into a comprehensive culture war. Among other things, it addresses:
- the interpretation of US history
- Academic freedom at universities
- Press freedom and media landscape
- The role of museums and schools
- Discussions about diversity and societal values
- increasing influence of religious aspects in politics
Furthermore, the question of what impact these developments have beyond the USA is addressed.
Part of a broad lecture series
The event series is supported by several institutions, including the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt, the City of Science Darmstadt, the Catholic Education Center nr30, and university and student communities.
Admission to the event is free, but donations are welcome.
