Mayors for Peace: Mayor Hanno Benz raises peace flags on Luisenplatz
The science city of Darmstadt is once again participating in the worldwide campaign of the international network "Mayors for Peace." On Tuesday, July 7, at 3 p.m., Mayor Hanno Benz will raise the organization's flag as well as the "No-No-Nyet" flag on Luisenplatz as a symbol for a peaceful world without nuclear weapons.
The event will take place in front of the regional government building and is intended to send a visible message for peace and nuclear disarmament.
Darmstadt has been a member of Mayors for Peace since 1999
The international organization "Mayors for Peace" was founded in 1982 on the initiative of Takeshi Araki, the then mayor of Hiroshima. The network's goal is to unite cities worldwide for peace work and, in particular, for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
The background to this is the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. Hiroshima was almost completely destroyed. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people died immediately after the attacks and in the following months; hundreds of thousands more suffered from the long-term consequences.
The science city of Darmstadt joined the network in 1999. Today, "Mayors for Peace" comprises more than 8,570 cities in 166 countries worldwide, including around 930 municipalities in Germany.
