The hiking trip leads to maars, Eltz Castle and a goat cheese dairy
Thirty-five members and friends of the Odenwald Club Groß-Gerau spent five eventful days on a hiking trip to the Eifel region. The program included hikes through the unique volcanic landscape, visits to historical sites, and regional specialties.
After arriving, the group reached their hotel in the Eifel region and first took a trip to Daun. There, the hikers gained fascinating insights into the geological history of the Eifel volcanoes and the famous maars at the Volcano Museum, which would be the destination of several hikes in the following days.
View of the Eifel maars
A highlight was the hike to the Dronketurm tower on the Mäuseberg hill. From there, there was an impressive view of the Gemündener Maar lake and the Weinfelder Maar lake with its idyllically situated chapel.
The tour then continued around the Schalkenmehrener Maar. While part of the group took the bus back to their accommodation, the other part continued the hike on foot.
Ulmener Maar and Vulkanhof
Other stops included the Ulmen castle ruins and the new Ulmener Maar tunnel, which connects the Jungferweiher maar with the Ulmener Maar.
After visiting St. Matthias Church in Ulmen, the program included a visit to the Vulkanhof farm. There, the participants learned interesting facts about goat cheese production and the work of the farm during a guided tour.
Mindfulness Trail and Castle Trail
The mindfulness trail along the Kleine Kyll near Manderscheid offered a unique nature experience. Hikers could experience the landscape with all their senses at numerous stations along the way.
The challenging Wolfschlucht gorge was also successfully conquered. Particularly athletic participants additionally tackled the Burgensteig trail and mastered the demanding route.
Social evenings at the hotel
In addition to the hikes, there was also plenty of time for socializing. Music and dance evenings, a wine tasting, a night hike, and a quiz night provided varied entertainment.
The trip concluded with an ice cream bombe with sparklers, providing a festive finale.
Eltz Castle as the highlight of the journey home
On the return journey, another highlight awaited: Eltz Castle. The castle, situated in the middle of the forest, was explored as part of a guided tour and formed the crowning finale of the hiking trip.
Reinhard Roth thanked the organizers Beate Bolbach and Else Schuster for planning and carrying out the successful trip. In total, the participants covered more than 40 kilometers on foot during the journey.
