Climate protection campaign starts on September 14th – up to 500 euros for a new device
The Groß-Gerau district is searching for the oldest refrigerator in the area. As part of a climate protection campaign, residents can nominate an appliance that is at least 20 years old. Whoever can prove they have the oldest refrigerator will receive a subsidy of up to €500 towards a new appliance with the highest energy efficiency rating,
The campaign starts on Monday, September 14, 2026, as part of the district's climate week. Applications are open until Friday, November 6, 2026.
The age of the refrigerator must be proven
Residents of the Groß-Gerau district whose refrigerators are at least 20 years old are eligible to participate. The age can be verified, for example, with a copy of the purchase receipt or by examining the refrigerator's rating plate. If a photo of the rating plate is provided, the manufacturer, year of manufacture, and model should be clearly visible.
If there are multiple applications with refrigerators from the same oldest year of manufacture, the winner will be chosen by lottery.
The winner receives a subsidy towards the purchase of a new refrigerator with energy efficiency class A. This subsidy amounts to a maximum of 500 euros. If the new appliance costs less, the district will reimburse the actual purchase price.

Older appliances consume significantly more electricity
With this campaign, the district aims to raise awareness of the energy consumption of older household appliances. As an example, the district administration cites an older refrigerator with an annual consumption of 410 kilowatt hours. An efficient new appliance, on the other hand, can manage with around 120 kilowatt hours.
Assuming an electricity price of 33 cents per kilowatt hour, the district calculates that the difference would correspond to a saving of approximately 95 euros per year. However, actual consumption and potential savings depend on the specific appliance and the electricity price.
The district of Groß-Gerau, together with the consumer center of Hesse, also offers free energy advice every second Tuesday of the month at the district administration office.
