Autobahn GmbH expects one of the strongest travel surges of the year
The German Federal Autobahn Company (Autobahn GmbH des Bundes) expects one of the busiest travel waves of the year for the upcoming Pentecost weekend. Travelers across Germany should prepare for congested highways and longer traffic jams.
The two-week Pentecost holidays are beginning, particularly in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Numerous short trips over the long weekend will also contribute to increased traffic.
Friday afternoons are particularly busy
The first major stress test is expected on Friday afternoon, May 22nd, when rush hour traffic coincides with the start of the holiday travel season. Many routes are also expected to remain busy on Saturday morning, May 23rd.
It could be relatively quiet on Pentecost Sunday, May 24th. However, traffic experts expect heavy return traffic on Pentecost Monday, May 25th.
Since Tuesday, May 26th, is also a school holiday in several federal states – including North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Berlin – traffic volume is expected to remain high.
These highways are particularly affected
Delays are expected, especially on major long-distance routes towards the coast and the Alps. These include, in particular:
- A1, A7 and A24 towards the North Sea and Baltic Sea
- A3, A5, A8 and A9 heading south towards the Alpine region
- A2 as an important east-west connection
Tips for traveling at Pentecost
Autobahn GmbH recommends the following to travelers:
- Check for roadworks and closures before you travel
- Start well-rested and bring plenty of drinks
- Schedule regular breaks
- For long journeys, use driver changes whenever possible
- Please observe dynamic detour instructions
- In case of traffic jams or slow-moving traffic, consistently form an emergency lane
