Nature conservation authority provides information about the start of the breeding and nesting season
With the arrival of spring comes the breeding and nesting season for many native wild animals. From March 1st to September 30th, special regulations are in place to protect the offspring of birds, mammals, and insects. During this period, clearing and pruning hedges, shrubs, and trees outside of private gardens is prohibited. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Groß-Gerau district urges residents to be considerate of wildlife.
Do not disturb wildlife – be considerate in everyday life
Spring brings increased activity to the animal world: migratory birds return, resident birds search for nesting sites, and many mammals give birth. Wild animals are particularly sensitive to disturbances from humans and pets. To support species conservation, citizens should follow simple measures:
- Stay on the paths while walking
- Keep dogs on a leashto avoid disturbing ground-nesting birds and fawns.
- Do not cut hedges and shrubsto protect nesting sites.
- Respect nests and burrows, even if no animals are visible.
What is allowed, what is not?
During the breeding and nesting season, felling trees outdoors and extensive pruning of hedges and shrubs are generally prohibited . However, some measures are permitted , provided that species protection is taken into account:
✅ Hedge trimming
✅ Rejuvenation of fruit trees and shrubs
✅ Keeping roads and sidewalks clear for traffic safety reasons
✅ Necessary tree felling in private gardens, provided no protected species are affected
