Sustainable project promotes reuse of shopping bags
At the KAGEL secondhand store in Darmstadt, customers can now transport their purchases home even more sustainably. A new bag exchange station has been set up in the store's premises on Pallaswiesenstrasse, enabling the sharing and reuse of shopping bags.
The principle is simple: Anyone who has well-preserved shopping bags at home can place them at the station. Other visitors can take the bags free of charge and use them for their shopping.
Fewer single-use bags, more sustainability
The new station is intended to promote the reuse of bags while simultaneously reducing the consumption of single-use bags.
"The bag exchange station is a good solution. The flood of single-use bags is a great danger to the environment and consumes a lot of energy and resources in its production," explains city treasurer André Schellenberg.
Station made from recycled material
The unique feature of the new facility also lies in its construction. The station consists of a honeycomb structure that has been attached to the packing cabinet of the department store.
The individual elements were manufactured using 3D printing from recycled material, thus combining several aspects of sustainable practices.
The idea originated at the Darmstadt Hackathon
The design of the bag exchange station was developed during a hackathon at Lab3 in Darmstadt. The event took place as part of the "ReUseMe" project, which aims to promote creative ideas for greater sustainability.
The project was initiated by Lust auf besser leben gGmbH from Frankfurt am Main. The goal was to develop a freely usable 3D printing template so that similar stations could be set up in other locations.
Implementation with the support of the Repair Café
The station was manufactured by Alexander Riegel from the Repair Café Griesheim, who produced the individual components using a 3D printer.
The department store of opportunities also provided the first supply of shopping bags, thus offering another way to conserve resources and promote sustainable consumption in everyday life.
