Applications for exhibitions at the Darmstadt Regional Council are still possible until October 15th
Art in the heart of a government office: For many years, the Darmstadt Regional Council has offered artists from the region a unique exhibition platform with its South Hesse Regional Gallery. Following the opening of the current exhibition, "LA COSECHA," attention is already turning to next year. Artists can apply for an exhibition in 2027 until October 15th
The regional gallery is located in the government offices at Luisenplatz and sees itself as part of regional cultural promotion. It showcases works by artists from the administrative district or by artists who have a demonstrable connection to the Rhine-Main/South Hesse region.
The program is aimed at artists with a professional background. There is intentionally no age limit. According to the regional government, the selection criteria are primarily artistic quality, as well as the applicants' eligibility for and need for funding.
From painting to sculpture and installation
The diversity of the regional gallery's program is evident in its history. The first documented exhibition took place in 1997, featuring works on paper by Inge Müller-Weiske. Since then, the gallery at Luisenplatz has presented a wide range of art, including paintings, drawings, photography, prints, sculptures, installations, and mixed-media works.
Collaborations with other institutions are also part of the gallery's history. For example, there have been joint exhibitions with the Darmstadt Secession, the Darmstadt Days of Photography, and the BBK Darmstadt-South Hesse. To mark its 25th anniversary in 2023, the regional gallery presented works by various artists from its history.
Most recently, in 2025, the exhibitions "TRANSITION" by Verena Freyschmidt and Paul Hirsch, as well as "HAPPINESS" with paintings by Liu Xue, were on display. The year 2026 began with the exhibition "Das zum BeiSpiel" by Juliana Jaeger, followed by "KOMPLEXE GEFLECHTE" with ceramic art by Felicithas Arndt and paintings by Gabriele Nold.
Independent advisory board participates in the decision-making process
In compiling the exhibition program, the regional government is supported by an independent advisory board of artistic experts. The presentations are intentionally not meant to compete with museums or professional galleries. Rather, the regional gallery sees itself as an instrument for promoting culture and as an opportunity to make art accessible to a broad public.
The work is also supported by a non-profit association that contributes to the financing of the exhibitions. The exhibition history also demonstrates that this support has played a vital role for many years: the association is listed there as a sponsor of numerous projects.
Applications must be submitted in writing
Those wishing to exhibit at the regional gallery in 2027 or 2028 can submit their applications until October 15, 2026. Only written applications will be accepted. These should include a CV, an exhibition list, and, if applicable, catalogs. Information on professional activities and any exhibitions already planned for 2027 and 2028 is also required.
