The authority warns against dubious offers and explains what to look out for regarding clients, payment, and job searches
The Darmstadt Regional Council (RP) is issuing guidelines for finding legitimate work-from-home opportunities. According to the authority, this advice is prompted by an increasing number of inquiries from citizens. The RP advises, among other things, not to make any upfront payments and to be particularly cautious with offers that only use foreign contact information or a WhatsApp number.
Working from home can include tasks such as assembling jewelry, filling and sorting parts, paperwork and quality control, as well as soldering, gluing, sewing, or assembly work. It is not the same as the home office .
What is meant by working from home
Home-based work is carried out in one's own home or at a self-chosen workplace. Employees produce goods or perform specific tasks on behalf of a company. The client bears the economic risk associated with the exploitation of the work results.
According to the regional council, piece rates are frequently paid, based on fixed minimum wages. Clients must comply with the binding wage regulations applicable to the respective home-based work, including any prescribed surcharges.
Beware of dubious offers
Those seeking a home-based job can, according to the regional council (RP), contact companies directly or search their job and career pages. Job centers, the Federal Employment Agency, chambers of skilled crafts, employers' associations, and employee representatives can also be helpful resources. Furthermore, it may be beneficial not to limit the search to companies in the immediate vicinity of one's residence.
The regional council (RP) advises particular caution when dealing with job advertisements on social media and in weekly newspapers. As warning signs, the authority cites, for example, employers who only provide a WhatsApp number or exclusively a foreign address. Job seekers should also avoid making any advance payments.
RP does not arrange home office jobs
The regional government office itself cannot arrange jobs or companies. According to the authority, it is prohibited from disclosing the names of companies that offer home-based work for reasons of competition law. The regional government office also does not maintain a register that companies could use to search for potential home-based workers.
The authority's responsibilities include monitoring compliance with prescribed working conditions and wages. Wage inspectors from the occupational safety department conduct checks on employees and clients. Companies that outsource work to home-based workers must report their employees to the Darmstadt Regional Council (RP Darmstadt) at regular intervals.
According to the regional government, the data collected will be used exclusively for inspections under the Home Work Act and will not be passed on to potential clients.
