The municipality will provide information on effective control measures on April 25th
The municipality of Seeheim-Jugenheim will be providing information on measures against the Asian tiger mosquito on Saturday, April 25, 2026. An information booth will be set up at the weekly market in Seeheim from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., where residents can learn about the control of this invasive mosquito species.
The spread in the region is increasing
The Asian tiger mosquito originates from Southeast Asia and was first detected in Hesse in 2018. Its presence in Seeheim-Jugenheim has been known for several years. While it was initially prevalent mainly in the Seeheim district, it is now increasingly spreading to other districts as well.
The mosquito season usually lasts from the beginning of April to the end of September.
Annoying and potentially problematic
The striking black and white striped tiger mosquito is particularly aggressive and, unlike native species, bites not only at dusk but throughout the day. This can make it a significant nuisance for many people.
Avoiding water is the most important measure
The most effective strategy against their spread is the consistent avoidance of breeding grounds. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in even the smallest accumulations of water, such as in saucers, toys, open containers, or clogged gutters.
The municipality is therefore calling on people to remove any water accumulation on properties and balconies at an early stage in order to curb the spread of the tiger mosquito.
