SV Darmstadt 98 suffered a heavy defeat before the international break. The Lilies lost 1-5 (1-2) to promotion favorites VfL Wolfsburg on Friday evening. However, the clear final score only tells part of the story: especially in the first half and immediately after the break, SV 98 certainly had opportunities to turn the game around.
Wolfsburg got off to a better start and deservedly took the lead in the 14th minute through Bernhardsson. However, Darmstadt gradually worked their way into the game. In the 29th minute, Kai Klefisch intercepted a clearance and set up Milan Smit, who powerfully fired the ball into the far corner to make it 1-1. The Lilies were now enjoying their best spell of the game, while the hosts began to look uncertain. Hojae even missed a chance to put Wolfsburg ahead after a corner. Instead, Wolfsburg struck at the other end: Robert Glatzel headed home to make it 2-1 in the 39th minute.
Even after the break, Darmstadt initially came close to equalizing. Patric Pfeiffer's long-range shot hit both posts, but the ball just wouldn't go in. Shortly afterward, Wolfsburg increased their lead to 3-1 – and the game completely turned around. The Lilies increasingly lost their grip on the game, while the hosts ruthlessly exploited their opportunities and extended their lead to 5-1 by the final whistle.
The takeaway is that SV 98 certainly had phases where more would have been possible. Especially after the equalizer and at the start of the second half, opportunities arose to turn the game around. However, in their current form, the team failed to capitalize on these moments and establish sustained stability in their play. After conceding the third goal, their structure finally crumbled.
The upcoming international break comes at a crucial time. Despite the impending trip to the USA, Darmstadt needs to address its identifiable weaknesses and find more consistency in its play.
