In the Lichtenberg block, school routes are to be made safer and sidewalks clearer
Implementation of a new traffic concept will begin in the Lichtenberg block in Darmstadt on Monday, November 2, 2026. As part of the "Heinerblock" project, the City of Darmstadt aims to improve traffic safety, reduce through traffic from outside the area, and reorganize the limited public road space. The focus will be on the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as school routes within the neighborhood.
The plan, approved by the city council, will be implemented gradually. No major construction work is required initially. Instead, the city is primarily relying on new road markings and signage.
Improve school routes along Lichtenberg and Müller streets
A particular focus is placed on the school route along Lichtenbergstrasse and Müllerstrasse.
The sidewalks there will soon be fully open to pedestrian traffic again. The city primarily aims to improve the safety of schoolchildren on their daily commute.
The reorganization of the road space is also intended to help reduce conflicts between different road users.
Furthermore, the city aims to reduce through traffic that is not directly connected to the neighborhood.
New markings and traffic signs
The implementation of the traffic concept begins with road marking work in the public road space. New signage will also be installed.
According to the city, major structural changes can be avoided. This allows the measures to be implemented relatively easily and gradually.
There may be temporary, localized traffic restrictions during the work.
Access to the properties remains possible at all times.
Properties remain accessible
Mobility officer Paul-Georg Wandrey emphasizes that the reorganization of the street space should not be at the expense of the accessibility of the neighborhood.
“The public space in the Lichtenberg block is limited and must meet different usage demands,” explains Wandrey.
With these initial measures, the city aims to balance these interests and, in particular, increase safety for pedestrians.
Even after the traffic concept is implemented, all properties will remain accessible. Delivery vehicles, emergency services, and garbage collection will still be able to access the neighborhood.
“We are therefore reorganizing the road space so that all road users can travel safely. This particularly benefits people who are on foot or by bicycle,” said Wandrey.
A phased implementation allows for adjustments
The traffic concept for the Lichtenberg block is part of the Darmstadt project “Heinerblock”, with which the city wants to change the traffic conditions within the district.
The measures will be implemented deliberately in stages. This will allow experience gained from practical application to be gathered and taken into account.
Should it become apparent that individual regulations are not functioning as intended or that additional adjustments are necessary, these can be made, according to the city.
A specific date for the complete completion of the measures has not yet been given.
