A general order is intended to protect streams and lakes during the drought
Due to the ongoing drought, the Groß-Gerau district has prohibited the withdrawal of water from surface waters with immediate effect . This affects streams, rivers, and lakes within the district. The aim of this general order is to protect the already heavily polluted waters and their flora and fauna from further damage.
The order is effective immediately and will remain in force until and including October 31, 2026
According to the district, the weeks-long drought and lack of rainfall have already led to very low water levels early in the year. At the same time, the groundwater level is also steadily declining. The high temperatures are exacerbating the situation, as shallow bodies of water are warming up considerably, further deteriorating living conditions for fish and other aquatic life.
The Rhine and Main rivers are excluded
The Rhine and Main rivers , as well as gravel pits connected to groundwater , are exempt from the water withdrawal ban . Despite the current low water levels, the water flow there is sufficient to allow for minor water withdrawals.
The district points out that compliance with the general order will be monitored. Violations can be punished with fines of up to €100,000 .
The district calls for the economical use of water
Regardless of the extraction ban, the Groß-Gerau district recommends limiting groundwater use as much as possible. Gardens should preferably be watered with well water in the early morning. It is advisable to water the soil directly, rather than the plants. Measures such as mulching or maintaining a dense ground cover can further reduce evaporation.
Watering lawns should be avoided if possible, as they usually recover after rainfall. Refilling pools should also be avoided whenever possible. For balcony and houseplants, the district recommends, among other things, using vegetable washing water.
Anyone wishing to install a garden fountain must notify the local water authority beforehand. Water regulations also apply to the disposal of pool water.
