The city requests consideration for irrigation vehicles in road traffic
The ongoing drought is posing major challenges for the green spaces in Weiterstadt. To ensure young trees, flowerbeds, and planters receive sufficient water, the municipal works department is currently distributing approximately 27,000 liters of water . Mayor Niklas Gehnich recently accompanied the irrigation team on a work assignment and saw the extensive work firsthand.
For irrigation, the municipal works department uses a Unimog with a 3,000-liter tank and a tractor with a 2,700-liter water trailer. Both vehicles need to be refilled several times during a workday.
The districts of Weiterstadt and Gräfenhausen are serviced twice a week. On Fridays, the municipal works department staff also take care of new plantings and flower boxes. Specialized companies are contracted to water the remaining districts.
"It's impressive to see how much time and effort watering our green spaces requires," says Mayor Niklas Gehnich. "The work of our colleagues is particularly demanding in heavy traffic. They frequently have to stop and maneuver their large vehicles, always keeping an eye on the traffic."
The city of Weiterstadt is therefore appealing to all road users to give the watering vehicles with their hazard lights flashing sufficient space and to be patient. This will allow the municipal works department to carry out its work safely and quickly, and ensure that the city's green spaces are preserved even during the dry period.
