An economist will be visiting Darmstadt on September 17th – lecture on alternative economic models, admission is free
How can economics, sustainability, and social justice be reconciled? Economist and journalist Wolfgang Kessler in a lecture on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 7 p.m. in Darmstadt. The event is organized by the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt and the Darmstadt Network for the Common Good Economy.
The lecture is entitled "Sustainable and fair economic management – but how? Paths to an economy that doesn't destroy". The venue is the "Knowledge for all! Podium for Education and Participation", a temporary course and education space in front of the Justus Liebig House at Große Bachgasse 2.
Alternatives to a growth economy
In his presentation, Kessler will discuss economic models that, according to the organizers, place greater emphasis on sustainability and social justice. He will present examples of alternative economic models that are already in practice.
Topics addressed include the effects of a growth-oriented economic system, as well as climate and environmental problems, poverty, and social inequality. Kessler also wants to explore what options individuals have to initiate change.
The economist worked at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the 1980s. From 1999 to 2019, he was editor-in-chief of the Christian magazine "Publik-Forum".
Open-air lecture
The event begins on September 17th at 7 pm at the "Knowledge for All! Podium for Education and Participation" in front of the Justus Liebig House, Große Bachgasse 2 in Darmstadt. Admission is free; donations are welcome.
