Theater Moller Haus will become a new location for cultural events and workshops for young people
The city of Darmstadt has awarded its city-wide youth cultural work contract to the association Freie Szene Darmstadt e. V. This gives the Moller Haus theater a central role in cultural work with young people. The existing programs can continue under the new management.
The reason for this is the termination of the previous project by the Protestant Deanery of Darmstadt, at whose youth center, huette, the youth cultural work had previously been based. The previous project manager, Kai Schuber-Seel, will now continue his work with the new sponsoring organization.
“The awarding of the youth cultural work contract to the Freie Szene Darmstadt e. V. (Independent Scene Darmstadt) is a strong signal of the importance of cultural participation and diversity for young people in our city,” explains Mayor Barbara Akdeniz. The Moller Haus theater offers ideal conditions to provide young people with space for creativity, interaction, and social engagement.
Developing programs together with young people
The Freie Szene Darmstadt e. V. (Independent Scene Darmstadt) is an association of independent theatre groups and artists from the city and operates the self-managed Moller Haus theatre. Its program includes contemporary theatre, children's and youth theatre, improvisational theatre, inclusive productions, and theatre education programs.
According to Kristina Werner, the managing director for children's and youth culture and theatre education, the youth culture work is intended to reach young people in particular who have had little access to cultural offers so far.
The aim is to create spaces where young people can develop their own ideas, contribute their topics, and actively participate in cultural projects. In the long term, participants should themselves become multipliers and inspire other young people to engage with the programs.
The development phase starts in the city districts
The new project is currently in its development phase. Kai Schuber-Seel will initially visit youth centers and meeting places in various districts of Darmstadt to develop suitable formats together with young people.
Plans include regular workshops and recreational activities for young people aged 13 to 18, holiday programs, and events in public spaces. These activities will be free of charge, as accessible as possible, and inclusive.
Since the Moller House Theatre itself has no rehearsal space, several youth centers have already pledged their support and are temporarily providing rooms for rehearsals. At the same time, further opportunities for creative workspaces will be explored together with the young people.
