The Bach Cantata Ensemble Darmstadt will perform a psalm setting by the Baroque composer at the service on Remembrance Day
A special work of Baroque church music will be the focus of the service at Trinity Church in Darmstadt-Eberstadt on Sunday, November 15, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. The Darmstadt Bach Cantata Ensemble will perform the psalm setting "De profundis" by the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745). Meike Metzger will conduct.
The service takes place on Remembrance Day. With its poignant text, the work fits the character of this day of remembrance.
A musical call from the depths
The title "De profundis" comes from the Latin opening words of Psalm 130. In the Luther Bible, it begins with the words: "Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.".
The psalm addresses human suffering, the plea for forgiveness, and the hope for redemption. Its musical setting is among the works of the composer Jan Dismas Zelenka, who initially worked as a double bassist and later as a composer at the Dresden court.
Zelenka is considered a significant representative of Baroque church music. His compositions are characterized by a distinctive musical language and an expressive setting of sacred texts.
Choir, trombones and vocal soloists
The performance in the Trinity Church will be given by the Bach Cantata Ensemble Darmstadt. The choir will be accompanied by, among others, three trombones and an oboe.
The soloists are David Pichlmaier (baritone), Florian Küppers (bass) and Pedro Ometto (bass).
The overall musical direction is in the hands of Meike Metzger.
