Open fires are prohibited in public open spaces and green areas until further notice
Due to the ongoing drought and the high risk of forest and grassland fires, the municipality of Nauheim has imposed a comprehensive ban on barbecues. The corresponding general order has been in effect since its publication and will remain in force until further notice.
All public open spaces and green areas within the municipality are affected. In addition to barbecuing, open fires of any kind are also prohibited. The municipality is responding to the current very dry weather conditions and the associated increased risk of fire.
Numerous areas are affected
The ban applies in particular to the following areas:
- Open areas and barbecue hut at Hegbachsee
- Green space Waldstraße (Ochsengrund)
- Berzallee Leisure Garden
- Berzallee youth leisure area
- Seichböhl
- Nauheim Sports Park
- Nauheim campsite
The railway at Hegbachsee remains exempt from this regulation.
Gas grills may still be used in the Berzallee leisure garden complex and at the Nauheim campsite.
Candles, water pipes and open fires are also prohibited
The ban doesn't just apply to traditional charcoal grills. Other prohibited items include:
- lighting candles
- lighting charcoal for water pipes
- Open fires for burning shrub and tree trimmings, grass, or other plant debris
- burning weeds with gas burners or flame weeders
The municipality also points out that even discarded cigarette butts, hot ashes or broken glass can cause fires.
Community responds to acute drought
According to the municipality, the soil in open and green spaces is extremely dry due to the high temperatures and lack of rainfall. Even the smallest sparks could lead to larger fires and cause considerable damage.
The general order was issued on the basis of the Hessian Law on Public Safety and Order. The measures ordered serve to protect people, the environment, and property.
Violations can be costly
Anyone who violates the ban on grilling and open fires will face a fine. This can range from €10 to €50,000, depending on the individual case.
The municipality has also ordered the immediate enforcement of the order. This means that the regulations must be observed immediately, even if legal remedies are pursued against the order.
The municipality of Nauheim publishes further information and the full text of the general decree on its website.
