New traffic areas and drainage system planned
Darmstadt is constructing new traffic areas and a drainage canal with a rainwater retention basin in the area of Schwarzer Weg.
The city council approved the measure at its meeting on Wednesday, May 27th. Planning, construction, and implementation will be handled by Bauverein AG.
Barrier-free design according to new construction project
In 2024, Bauverein AG built a new residential building in Schwarzen Weg with house numbers 22, 22A and 22B.
The northern section of the Schwarzer Weg (Black Path) previously only had an unpaved surface. In the future, this area will be constructed with asphalt to be easily accessible for the first time.
Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey explains: “The preparation of modern traffic areas and a high-performance drainage canal with rainwater retention basins is a direct investment in the infrastructure of our city.”
New rainwater drainage channel with retention basin
Since the soil in this area has only low infiltration properties and the adjacent railway line precludes an infiltration system, rainwater will be collected via street drains in the future.
A stormwater drain approximately 220 meters long is planned. The water will first be temporarily stored in a stormwater retention basin and then released at a controlled rate into the existing combined sewer system.
Additionally, a sedimentation shaft will be installed for the pretreatment of rainwater.
Tree felling and replanting are planned
Two trees will have to be felled to implement this measure. At the same time, new trees will be planted.
The construction project includes, among other things, the widening of the roadway, the construction of drainage systems, and the planting of new trees.
The costs for planning and construction are borne entirely by Bauverein AG.
