A total of 38 stations with 64 vehicles in public spaces – further expansion already planned
The science city of Darmstadt is further expanding its carsharing service. Following a third round of bidding, twelve new carsharing stations have been installed in public spaces. These stations are operated by the providers book-n-drive and stadtmobil and are intended to further strengthen the availability of sustainable mobility options in the city.
The new stations each have one or two parking spaces and are located at the following locations:
- Lichtenbergstrasse 22
- Robert-Schneider-Straße 54 (Mollerplatz)
- Alfred-Messel-Weg 6
- Rößlerstraße 5
- Flower Avenue 2
- Schlossgartenstraße 1 (Kantplatz)
- Kiesstraße 73
- Mornewegstraße 43
- Holzhofallee / Berliner Allee
- Fünfkirchner Straße 47
- Franklinstraße 26 (from May 2027)
- Mahalia-Jackson-Straße 27 (from May 2027)
Darmstadt is one of the leading carsharing cities
With the new stations, Darmstadt now has 38 carsharing locations with a total of 64 vehicles in public spaces. Numerous additional vehicles are available in private parking areas. This makes Darmstadt the third-largest carsharing fleet in the region, after Frankfurt am Main and Mainz.
According to the city, the number of users has been steadily increasing since the introduction of public car-sharing stations. The service is particularly well-received when vehicles are readily available and easily visible, close to where people live.
Mobility officer Paul Georg Wandrey sees this as an important building block of the transport revolution: “By expanding the car-sharing service, we are creating attractive alternatives to private cars and further strengthening sustainable mobility in Darmstadt. The new locations contribute to modern, climate-friendly and space-saving mobility.”
Alternative to owning a car
Carsharing is an important component of Darmstadt's mobility strategy. The service enables many households to forgo owning a private vehicle or a second car. At the same time, existing parking spaces are used more efficiently, and parking pressure in residential areas is reduced.
An important legal basis for the expansion was the inclusion of corresponding carsharing regulations in the Hessian Road Act in 2024. This allows public spaces to be used for carsharing services in a legally compliant manner.
The science city is already planning the next expansion phase: A fourth round of tenders is scheduled for 2026. The newly awarded sites are expected to go into operation in 2027.
