The special needs school will reopen at its Vogelsbergstraße location after the summer holidays
The Christoph Graupner School will return to its fully renovated location on Vogelsbergstrasse for the upcoming school year. As the City of Darmstadt announced, the upcoming move was celebrated on Monday (22nd) with a special event: 185 students and 95 teachers and staff members traveled together on two HEAG mobilo trams from their previous temporary locations to the "Nordbad" stop.
In recent years, the school community has been spread across two locations – the Luise-Büchner-School in the Lincoln settlement and premises on Donnersbergring. The joint tram ride was intended to symbolically mark the transition back to the original school location.
Return after challenging years
“We are delighted that we will be returning to the renovated buildings on Vogelsbergstrasse for the upcoming school year,” explains Headmistress Stefanie Wenzel. The past few years at two locations have been a major challenge for the entire school community. The joint trip was therefore an important step in preparing the students for the final move.
School superintendent Holger Klötzner also sees the return as a significant step for inclusive education in Darmstadt. The modernized and accessible spaces will offer children and young people with special educational needs optimal learning conditions in the future.
Barrier-free access to local public transport
Head of Transport Paul Georg Wandrey emphasized that the return also ensures good public transport connections. The nearby "Nordbad" tram stop provides barrier-free access to the school and thus supports the social inclusion of the students.
Johannes Gregor, Managing Director of HEAG mobilo, also wished the school community a successful start to the new school year after the summer holidays.
At the Christoph Graupner School, children and young people with special educational needs in intellectual, physical and motor development are taught.
