A Groß-Gerau initiative invites refugees and immigrants to a breakfast with German language practice
Learn German together over a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and strike up a conversation: The "Coffee and Hot Chocolate" at the Anne Frank Youth Center (Grüner Weg 5) continues to offer regular opportunities for intercultural exchange. Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:45 to 10:45 a.m., around 15 to 20 participants with refugee or migration backgrounds meet for a free breakfast – open, accessible, and intergenerational.
Since 2022, the project, supported by the Office for Social Affairs, Integration, Youth and Seniors of the city of Groß-Gerau – initially in cooperation with the Psychosocial Center for Refugees of Southern Hesse – stands for language support and cultural dialogue on equal terms. "Our goal is to enable encounters without pressure to perform, but with a lot of heart," says project manager Christiane Eichhorn.
Language practice, childcare and support from the region
In addition to practical language practice, the project also offers parallel childcare for children up to six years old – with creative crafts and games so that parents can participate without stress. The project will be supported in the future by a regular donation of bread rolls from the Darmstädter bakery (25 rolls per event day). The company ESC in Groß-Gerau contributing to its implementation.
In 2023, the format was awarded the Come-Together Prize – a symbol of a vibrant community spirit that reflects the diversity of the city's society week after week. No registration is required – just come along and join in.
