More greenery, new recreational areas and a modern play area from June 25th
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, will begin redesigning the area surrounding the Pallaswiesenviertel community center at Kirschenallee 180 on Thursday, June 25, 2026. The community center, operated by the Caritas Association Darmstadt e. V., serves as a contact and advice center for residents of the neighborhood and is also the location of the "Social Cohesion" neighborhood workshop.
The city of Darmstadt, a center of science and research, has announced that the approximately 1,750 square meter outdoor area will undergo comprehensive modernization. In addition to the forecourt, the project includes a municipal playground and sports field, as well as the landscaped entrance area.
Improved quality of life and climate protection
Once completed, the approximately 400-square-meter plaza will be versatile and usable for various purposes – such as neighborhood festivals, events, or as a meeting place for the community. Partial removal of paving and the planting of new trees will also improve the microclimate and create additional shade.
“With the redesign of the area around the Pallaswiesenviertel community center, we are making a targeted investment in the quality of life for local residents. By upgrading the outdoor areas, we are creating an attractive, safe, and inviting place for meetings, consultations, and neighborly interaction,” explains Mayor Barbara Akdeniz.
Play and sports facilities are being expanded
The approximately 1,350 square meter playground and sports field is one of the few designated play areas in the entire "Social Cohesion" funding area. After its redesign, it is intended to offer children, teenagers, and families a modern, conveniently located play and sports facility.
Planning Director Michael Kolmer emphasizes: “The redesign of the area around the Pallaswiesenviertel community center is an important building block for the sustainable development of the district. This will create a high-quality open space that meets the requirements of a modern and livable city.”
Accessibility and citizen participation
Accessibility also plays a key role in the redesign. This includes the construction of a standard-compliant ramp for wheelchair users. The city's officer for accessible building and mobility was involved in the planning process.
The design was developed by the Karlsruhe-based firm Stadt Landschaft plus and coordinated with the city planning office, the parks department, and the social planning office. The project was preceded by a two-stage public participation process.
Part of the funding program “Social Cohesion”
This measure is part of the urban development program "Social Cohesion," which has continued the former "Social City" program since 2020. It is based on the Integrated Urban Development Concept for the Pallaswiesen and Morneweg districts, adopted in 2018.
The project is financed by already approved funding from the "Social Cohesion" program and from the climate funding allocation of urban development grants. The goal is to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood in the long term while simultaneously implementing climate adaptation measures.
