A silent commemoration ceremony for the 175th birthday at the Old Cemetery
The city of Darmstadt will commemorate the 175th anniversary of the birth of Darmstadt writer Gottfried Schwab with a silent memorial service on Friday, June 26. According to the city, a floral arrangement will be laid at his honorary grave in the Old Cemetery. Schwab, who was born in Darmstadt on June 26, 1851, and died in 1903, is considered one of the most important figures in Darmstadt's literary history.
From the White Tower to the world of literature
Gottfried Schwab was born in his parents' business premises near the White Tower. After finishing school, he spent several years in Switzerland. The impressions of the mountains and nature he gained there later influenced many of his poems.
Schwab initially worked in the family business before devoting himself entirely to writing in the 1870s.
Connection to nature and homeland as central themes
Among his best-known works are the poetry collection "Allerlei Bergfahrten" (Various Mountain Journeys) and the historical narrative "Tisiphone". His literature combines a love of nature, a sense of home, and the cultural currents of his time.
With this memorial service, the science city of Darmstadt honors an author whose works still occupy a firm place in the city's literary and cultural history.
