Event at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt to mark the 100th birthday of Feldman, Brown and Tudor
The Academy of Music, the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD), and the Jazz Institute Darmstadt invite you to a special concert event at the Kunsthalle Darmstadt on Thursday, June 11, 2026. The occasion is the 100th birthday of composers Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and David Tudor, who are considered key figures of the Darmstadt Summer Courses.
The concert installation begins at 7 pm and takes place amidst the current exhibition of the Dutch artist Robert Zandvliet.
The focus is on ideas from the New York School
With this event, the participating institutions are taking up the artistic ideas of the so-called New York School. Feldman, Brown, and Tudor were among the leading figures of this influential movement in New Music and worked closely with the Darmstadt Summer Courses for many years.
By combining music, space and visual art, their concepts are intended to be experienced by the audience.
Students and music prize winners will perform at the evening event
The musicians performing are students from the Academy of Music as well as the Darmstadt composer, artist and Darmstadt music prize winner Nikolaus Heyduck.
The event combines educational, artistic and archive-related perspectives and sees itself as a musical journey through the exhibition spaces of the Kunsthalle.
Project from the "New Music Workshop"
The project originated as part of the "New Music Workshop" seminar at the Academy of Music. The seminar was led by academy lecturers and Darmstadt Music Prize winners Sun-Young Nam and Arne Gieshoff.
The musical performances are complemented by archival materials that illuminate the historical context of the works and their time of origin.
Admission to the event is free.
Further information can be found on the website of the Academy of Music.
