Museum commemorates Darmstadt's railway history
The Darmstadt-Kranichstein Railway Museum celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday (15th). The museum was opened in 1976 on the grounds of the former railway depot and, with more than 200 historic vehicles, is considered the largest railway museum in Hesse.
Importance for Darmstadt highlighted
Among the guests at the anniversary celebration was Darmstadt's Head of Mobility, Paul Georg Wandrey, who represented Mayor Hanno Benz.
In his welcoming address, Wandrey recalled the importance of the railway for the city's development. With the opening of the Main-Neckar Railway on July 27, 1846, Darmstadt was connected to the growing railway network.
More than 200 historic vehicles
The museum is run by the Museumsbahn eV (Museum Railway Association), which was founded in 1970. The association is dedicated to preserving historic locomotives and carriages and regularly organizes special excursions.
"The railway museum is, on the one hand, a popular destination for families and railway enthusiasts, and on the other hand, it is a place where the history of the railway and thus the history of society is documented and brought to life," explained Wandrey.
He thanked the volunteers of the association for their many years of dedication to preserving Darmstadt's railway history.
