Emergency control center registers more heat-related emergencies – Health Commissioner calls for caution
The ongoing heat wave is causing a rise in heat-related emergencies in the Bergstraße district. The district administration is drawing attention to this in light of the impending record temperatures. Maximum temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius are expected in the district on Saturday.
"The persistent heat can put a great strain on the body and pose health risks. That's why it's important for us to inform people about ways to protect their health in extreme temperatures," explains Angelika Beckenbach, First Deputy District Administrator and Head of the Health Department.
Drink plenty of fluids and avoid exertion
The district administration recommends shifting outdoor activities to the early morning or late evening hours whenever possible. Physical exertion should be avoided during the hottest part of the day.
Adequate fluid intake is also important. At least 1.5 to 2 liters of non-alcoholic beverages per day are recommended. In hot weather or during physical exertion, the requirement can be significantly higher.
According to the district, diet also plays a role. Light meals such as salads or cold soups, as well as water-rich fruits and vegetables, relieve the body. Mineral-rich foods like lentils, millet, or nuts provide additional support. Foods very high in fat or protein should be avoided as much as possible.
Avoid the sun and keep living spaces cool
Anyone spending time outdoors should seek shade whenever possible and take precautions against sun damage. This includes sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30, light-colored and lightweight clothing, a hat, and sunglasses.
To cool down, lukewarm showers or foot and arm baths are recommended. Living spaces should ideally only be ventilated in the early morning, evening, or night hours. During the day, closed windows and lowered blinds help keep the heat out. Heat-generating electrical appliances should be used as sparingly as possible.
