A lecture in Nieder-Ramstadt commemorates the Jewish communities in Eberstadt, Nieder-Ramstadt and Ober-Ramstadt
The history of Jewish life in Eberstadt, Nieder-Ramstadt, and Ober-Ramstadt will be the focus of a lecture hosted by the Mühltal Local History Working Group on Friday, September 18, 2026. The speaker will be historian Rahel Blum, who is involved in a major research project at Goethe University Frankfurt on the history of synagogues and Jewish communities in Hesse.
Under the title "Jewish Life Along the Modau," Blum presents the results of her research on the three former Jewish rural communities. The timeframe spans from the second half of the 16th century to the persecution and murder of the Jewish population during the Nazi era.
Approximately 400 Jewish communities and synagogues were examined
The lecture is based on a research project by Goethe University Frankfurt, for which around 400 synagogues and Jewish communities in the Darmstadt administrative district are being examined and documented based on extensive archival research.
The first volume of the project was published at the end of 2025 under the title "Fragile Neighborhood – Memorial Book of the Synagogues and Jewish Communities in Hesse". The publication is available both as a freely accessible open-access version and in bookstores.
Rahel Blum is a research associate on the project and co-author of several contributions to the memorial book. These include the studies on Eberstadt, Nieder-Ramstadt, and Ober-Ramstadt.
History of three Jewish rural communities
At the event in Nieder-Ramstadt, Blum will trace the development of the three communities and provide insights into earlier Jewish life along the Modau River. The lecture will thus cover several centuries of regional history, extending to the destruction of the communities through Nazi persecution.
The event begins on Friday, September 18th, at 6 p.m. in the Bürgerzentrum Nieder-Ramstadt, Ober-Ramstädter Straße 2–4. Admission is free.
