Funding project creates new habitats for birds and small mammals
New nesting aids for birds and other animals have been installed at the Wolfskehlen nature kindergarten in Riedstadt. The project was made possible by funding from the Nature Children's Fund.
Support from a nature conservation association
Together with the NABU Groß-Gerau district association, experts installed various nesting boxes on the grounds "An der Sandkaute". The children were able to observe how different models for different animal species were installed.
Among other things, nest boxes for tits with different sized entrance holes were installed, as well as special cavities for nuthatches and semi-cavities for garden and common redstarts. The selection was complemented by bat boxes and shelters for garden dormice and squirrels.
Funding from the Nature Children Fund
The purchase of the nesting boxes was made possible by a prize of 1,000 euros. The nature-based kindergarten had successfully applied to the "Naturkinder" initiative, which supports environmental education projects.
The aim was to introduce children to the local wildlife and to further enhance the existing habitat on the site.
The first animals are already moving in
According to the daycare management, the new nesting boxes were accepted shortly after installation. Just a few days later, several nesting boxes were occupied by tits, and a nuthatch cavity was also being used.
The project combines practical nature conservation work with environmental education and allows children direct insights into the lifestyle of native animal species.
