Children and parents discover nature in the Groß-Gerau Forest
A family hike organized by the Odenwald Club Groß-Gerau has now turned into an exciting discovery tour through the local forest.
Fascinating insights into nature
Together with hiking guide Dietmar Autz, parents and children explored the Groß-Gerau Forest. Among other things, the participants learned about the importance of rescue points in the forest and how they can provide orientation in an emergency.
Autz also vividly explained the different "layers" of the forest – from the root area through the herbaceous and shrub layer to the tree crowns.
The forest as a habitat
The focus of the hike was the importance of the forest as a source of life. Topics discussed included oxygen production, water storage, and the forest's function as a habitat for numerous animals and plants.
Dead wood also played a role: The group learned how beetles, fungi and microorganisms decompose dead wood, thus returning important nutrients to the natural cycle.
Reward for completion
After the hike, the families met at the Odenwald Club's clubhouse. There, a small surprise from the treasure chest awaited the children as a reward for their efforts in learning in the "forest classroom".
