Construction work starts on June 29 – traffic will continue via temporary traffic lights
On Monday, June 29, 2026, Hessen Mobil will begin renewing the traffic light system at the intersection of the B42 federal highway, the street "Im Rödling," and Darmstädter Straße in Weiterstadt. Known as the "Segmüller Junction," this traffic intersection is one of the busiest in the city, with approximately 18,000 vehicles passing through it daily.
Hessen Mobil reports that a temporary traffic light system will be installed first. Subsequently, the existing traffic signal system, which is over 20 years old, will be completely dismantled and replaced with modern technology. The new system is scheduled to go into operation in October 2026.
Traffic flow will generally remain unchanged
During the construction work, traffic will be regulated by temporary traffic lights. At times, individual lanes in the intersection area will need to be closed. However, all traffic movements will generally remain possible, so the intersection will remain accessible from all directions.
The upgrade is necessary because the existing system has become increasingly prone to malfunctions and spare parts are becoming difficult to obtain.
Modern technology and greater accessibility
The new traffic light system will be equipped with energy-efficient LED technology and connected to the central traffic control system. This should make traffic management more flexible and efficient in the future.
Furthermore, the facility will be made accessible. Plans include acoustic signals and tactile elements that will make it easier for people with visual impairments and mobility limitations to cross the street safely. In some cases, new shafts will also be installed using underground construction methods to accommodate the new technology.
Costs of approximately 409,000 euros
The total cost of the project amounts to approximately €409,000. The city of Weiterstadt is contributing about €241,000 of this. The remaining approximately €168,000 is being financed by the federal government.
