Diseased horse chestnut trees must be pruned back
Tree work will begin at Wilhelminenplatz in Darmstadt from mid-May. Several horse chestnut trees will need to be pruned by the city's tree maintenance crew.
Trees affected by disease
According to the city of Darmstadt, the trees are suffering from bacterial horse chestnut blight. The disease impairs the trees' stability, meaning their long-term stability and resistance to breakage can no longer be guaranteed.
To ensure traffic safety, the crowns will first be trimmed. The actual felling of the affected trees is planned for autumn, so that both the current flowering season and the breeding and nesting season can be taken into account.
Restrictions possible at Wilhelminenplatz
During the construction work, there may be temporary restrictions and parking bans around Wilhelminenplatz.
New trees are to be planted promptly after the felling. According to the city, a more resilient variety of chestnut tree is planned.
