A decommissioned plant from Groß-Gerau is to generate electricity and heat in western Ukraine in the future
Überlandwerk Groß-Gerau GmbH (ÜWG) is supporting Ukraine with a special donation in kind: A used combined heat and power plant (CHP) has now been transported by heavy haulage from the company's site in Groß-Gerau to the western Ukrainian city of Khmelnytskyi. There, the plant will be used by a regional energy supplier to generate electricity and heat.
The idea for the donation arose following an appeal by the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU). ÜWG Managing Director Jürgen Schmidt, together with District Administrator Thomas Will, launched the project.
“I heard about Ukraine’s appeal for donations through the Association of Municipal Enterprises. That immediately gave me the idea. I discussed it with District Administrator Thomas Will, and he was also enthusiastic. As a local energy supplier, it’s a matter of course for us to support the people and the energy company in Ukraine – especially since the combined heat and power plant can no longer be used in Germany. My thanks go to all the ÜWG employees who dedicated themselves fully to the organization and transport,” explains Jürgen Schmidt.
The aid operation was organized by ÜWG together with the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH. GIZ coordinated the transfer of the plant to the Ukrainian energy supplier and supported the logistical handling on site.
With this donation, ÜWG is contributing to the stabilization of the energy supply in Ukraine, which has repeatedly been the target of attacks on critical infrastructure since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression.
