Volunteers help with arrival and everyday questions
In Weiterstadt, six new WIR guides have completed their training.
The certificates were presented by Mayor Niklas Gehnich at the town hall on May 11th.
Support for starting up in Germany
The volunteers are involved in the Hessian state program WIR and support immigrants as they arrive in Weiterstadt.
They help with bureaucratic issues, career guidance, or finding a kindergarten place, among other things.
Many of the new guides bring their own migration experiences and know the challenges of a fresh start from personal experience.
Help for self-help in everyday life
The WIR guides are integrated into the volunteer agency of the city of Weiterstadt.
Their tasks include, among other things, accompanying people to appointments with authorities, offices, or to parent-teacher meetings in schools and daycare centers.
They also facilitate contacts with local associations and initiatives, thereby supporting social participation.
Project coordinator Doris Morhard describes the offer as help for self-help with the aim of supporting people in discovering their own strengths and resources.
Signs of social cohesion
According to the city, the volunteers make an important contribution to social cohesion and integration in Weiterstadt.
Those in charge expressed their gratitude for the commitment of the newly trained guides and hope for many more support services for immigrants in the area.
