Greater safety on the way to school – the city of Darmstadt is installing a new pedestrian crossing
The city of Darmstadt is improving traffic safety in the vicinity of the Edith Stein School. A new pedestrian crossing is being installed on Seekatzstrasse. The work, including the installation of additional lighting, is scheduled to be completed by the end of July.
This will provide students with a safer way to cross the road between the school buildings after the summer holidays.
The measure was prompted by feedback from the school community. Parents and the school administration had drawn attention to the particular situation: Because the Edith Stein School's classrooms are spread across two buildings, students regularly have to cross Seekatzstraße to reach classrooms, specialist rooms, and the cafeteria. Until now, this was sometimes only possible when accompanied by teachers.
“The safety of our children on their way to school is our highest priority. That’s why we took up the suggestion from the school and the parents and implemented it quickly. For the new school year, students will have a significantly safer crossing option available,” explains Head of Mobility Paul Georg Wandrey.
The city, together with the relevant authorities, examined the situation and found a suitable solution. Wandrey emphasized that there should be no compromises on safety, especially on school routes.
"When parents, schools and citizens point out specific danger spots, we listen carefully. Where improvements are possible and technically sensible, we implement them consistently," the mobility officer continued.
The new pedestrian crossing is intended not only to make the route to school safer, but also to facilitate the transition between buildings during the school day.
