The tour highlights the development between the city moat and the railway line
The Groß-Gerau City Museum, together with former museum director Jürgen Volkmann and city archivist Dominik Veith, invites you to a historical city tour. Titled "Between City Moat and Railway Line," the tour on Saturday, July 4, 2026, will focus on the development of Groß-Gerau's new housing and factory district during the Gründerzeit (founding era).
The meeting point is at 2 pm in front of the Groß-Gerau City Museum.
Industrialization shaped the cityscape
The guided tour leads through the city center, past the former city moat, and towards the train station. The focus is on the profound changes that began with the arrival of the railway in Groß-Gerau in 1858.
With the connection to the railway network, industrialization gained in importance and had a lasting impact on both the cityscape and the social life of the district capital.
Following the traces of the city's history
During the tour, various sites from the Gründerzeit (founding era) will be visited. The route leads, among other places, through the area of Adolf-Göbel-Straße, past the former site of the synagogue and the Catholic Church of St. Walburga. The tour ends in the Fabrikstraße area.
Participants gain insights into the urban development and economic history of Groß-Gerau.
Snack after the tour
Following the tour, the Friends of the City Museum invite you to a small snack.
A participation fee of five euros will be charged. Registration is required and can be done via email to dominik.veith@gross-gerau.de .
