The municipality continues to rely on cooperation with the regional energy supplier
The municipality of Messel has re-awarded the concessions for operating the electricity and gas networks. ENTEGA AG, together with its subsidiary e-netz Südhessen AG, will continue to be responsible for the energy infrastructure in the UNESCO World Heritage municipality for the next 20 years.
The new concession agreement was signed on June 11 by Mayor Dr. Thorsten Buhrmester and ENTEGA board member Andreas Niedermaier. It will come into effect in July 2026 and run until the end of June 2046.
Re-award after the expiry of the current contract term
The tender became necessary because the previous contract had expired after the legally permissible maximum term of 20 years. ENTEGA and e-netz Südhessen AG reapplied for the concessions and were successful in the tendering process.
“By awarding the two concessions to ENTEGA and e-netz Südhessen, the municipality of Messel is relying on continued reliable cooperation that has proven successful in the past. The partnership with the regional energy supplier means stability and predictability for us as a municipality,” explained Mayor Dr. Thorsten Buhrmester at the contract signing.
Long-standing partnership continues
Andreas Niedermaier, board member for personnel and infrastructure at ENTEGA AG, also expressed his delight at the municipality's decision.
“We are very pleased with the renewed trust placed in us by the municipality of Messel. We have been working together fairly and reliably for several decades, and I am sure that the renewed award of the electricity and gas concession to us will continue to be a successful partnership for both sides,” said Niedermaier.
More than 1,200 electrical connections in Messel
The electricity grid in Messel currently comprises approximately 70 kilometers of power lines. In addition, there are about 25 kilometers of gas pipelines. The grid currently supplies more than 1,200 electricity connections and around 500 gas connections.
With the new concession agreement, the responsibility for the operation, maintenance and further development of the municipality's energy infrastructure remains in the hands of the regional energy supplier until at least mid-2046.
