The senior citizens' representative provides information about heat protection and cool places in the city area
On the occasion of the nationwide Heat Awareness Day on June 11, 2026, Stefanie Ondruch, the senior citizens' representative for the city of Griesheim, is providing information about important measures to protect against the health consequences of extreme summer heat. Older people and those with pre-existing conditions are particularly at risk during periods of high temperatures.
Experience from recent years has shown that prolonged periods of heat can lead to health problems, especially in people over 70 years of age.
Older people are particularly affected
As we age, our bodies react differently to high temperatures. Sweating often starts later, and the sensation of thirst decreases. This increases the risk of dehydration. At the same time, reduced physical capacity and limitations of the cardiovascular system can intensify the effects of heat.
The city of Griesheim therefore recommends taking precautions in good time and adapting one's behavior to hot days.
This makes it easier to cope with heat
One of the most important recommendations is adequate fluid intake. You should drink about two to three liters of water, unsweetened tea, or diluted fruit juice throughout the day. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, you should consult your doctor about your fluid intake.
Fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelons or cucumbers, can also help support fluid balance. Damp cloths, lukewarm showers, or water sprays are suitable for cooling down.
Physical activities should ideally be scheduled for the morning hours. It is also recommended to avoid direct sunlight and protect yourself with a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Living spaces stay cooler if blinds or curtains remain closed during the day and ventilation only occurs in the early morning or late evening hours.
Cool places in the city
Those seeking respite from the heat on hot days will find various shady spots in Griesheim. These include Bar-le-Duc Square, the Green Room at the Georg-Schüler-Anlage, the city park on Wolfsweg, the playground at St. Stephan's Square, the Griesheim cemetery, and the Griesheim city forest.
St. Stephen's Church, which is open during the day, also offers a cool retreat. The Griesheim outdoor swimming pool is another option for recreation.
Pay attention to each other
The senior citizens' representative also appeals to the public to pay particular attention to elderly people in their immediate surroundings during heat waves. Symptoms such as severe fatigue, exhaustion, circulatory problems, headaches, or difficulty concentrating could be signs of heat-related stress.
Even small acts of help in everyday life, a phone call or a short visit could make an important contribution to protecting vulnerable people.
Further information on the topic of heat protection as well as the brochure “Heat Etiquette” are available at the senior citizens' office of the city of Griesheim.
