The district and wildlife rescue center will be providing information on September 24th about hedgehog-friendly gardens and how to deal with injured animals
How can garden owners help hedgehogs, and what should be done if a weakened or injured animal is found? These and other questions will be addressed at an information evening on hedgehog conservation on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 6 p.m. in the Groß-Gerau District Office. Online participation is also possible.
The event is being organized by the Lower Nature Conservation Authority of the Groß-Gerau district together with a wildlife rescue center. The focus will be on practical ways to create a habitat for hedgehogs in your own garden.
Food and shelter are becoming scarcer
According to the district, hedgehogs are finding increasingly less food and suitable places to retreat to, especially in cities. In autumn, the animals need sufficient fat reserves for their upcoming hibernation. At the same time, they require sheltered sleeping places, which can be found, for example, under hedges or in piles of leaves and brushwood.
The event will explain how gardens can be made more hedgehog-friendly. It will also cover the proper handling of weakened or injured hedgehogs and the potential dangers posed to these animals by robotic lawnmowers.
Staff from the wildlife rescue center and the lower nature conservation authority will also share their experiences from working with hedgehogs. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion.
